How should I choose the settings?
Start with the original dimensions and default quality, then compare file sizes. If needed, lower the quality or longest side. This tool does not promise a specific KB target and will clearly tell you if the output is larger.
What happens to transparency and the original photo?
PNG and WebP preserve transparency; JPEG uses a white background. PNG reduces size mainly through resizing, so its quality slider is disabled. Re-encoding removes original metadata such as EXIF and may change colors or detail. The original file is never overwritten. One static image at a time; GIF, HEIC, SVG, animation and oversized images are not supported.
